A natural cold sore rescue gel, featuring a delightful blend of liquorice extract and melissa oil, could be just what you need to help ease the intensity of cold sore outbreaks.
Unfortunately, there aren’t many treatments available for cold sores, even though they’re a common skin condition. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus, which can stay dormant in the skin around the mouth and nose until an outbreak is triggered. Most products in pharmacies are meant to be used once a cold sore is active (when an actual sore appears). However, there are some natural ingredients that can be beneficial in between outbreaks. Liquorice root extract (glycyrrhizic acid) has been shown in published studies to inhibit the herpes virus's activity to some extent. A trial conducted by the Herpes Virus Association (HVA) on Lip Q Liquorice Balm, which contains a concentrated extract of liquorice root, demonstrated that it reduced the severity and duration of cold sore outbreaks for most users.

We were aware of the research on liquorice and were interested in carrying out an in vivo trial. Quite often results which look impressive in a test tube are not as effective in real life testers. However, Skin Shop’s Liquorice has performed well with respondents showing a marked reduction in severity and duration of their cold sore outbreaks. In light of this research we are happy to recommend this treatment to our members.
